Why most teachers don't allow overcutting/crossing in Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)?

What is the prime reason for not permitting students to cross out an option and attempt the other in MCQ type exam? And if its so because the checking would be computerized, why do teachers still impose this rule even when they have to check it manually?
