Tablet/Computer for taking notes?

So im going to college and im terrible at taking notes but i dont want to drag my laptop around so i was wondering what would be the best tablet/mini computer to use to take notes meaning type them or that could use a lab program and maybe also have ebooks on ( computerized text books ) i tried the ipad at the mac store and found it terrible for typing... any suggestions?
